It's the last hurrah!
Summer always does this to us. Just as we're getting into the swing of things, it's closing week. Over the next few days we have some great shows and the same great food (Monday will get a little sketchy, food-wise. Let us tell you what to have and no one gets hurt.) The Beachcomber is everything that's right about summer - and quite simply, you should be here.
But you knew that.
On Friday come see Shango Axe - Cape Cod's favorite reggae act. Beer is best cold and reggae is best at the beach. It's a universal law. When Shango Axe comes we get to see all our local friends who've had their heads down hard at work all summer.
On Saturday, we have Pete Witham and the Cozmik Zombies - rockabilly/twisted Americana from Portland, Maine. Here's what they're like: A friend of ours found a Led Zeppelin t-shirt mixed in with his NRBQ, Kathleen Edwards and Frank Black t-shirts and wondered how it got there. On closer inspection, he realized the Cozmik Zombies had turned Zeppelin shirts inside out and printed their own tour shirt inside. That's Pete Witham and the Cozmik Zombies in a nutshell. Here's more of what they're like: (website)
On Sunday afternoon, it's a very happy Happy Hour with the Incredible Casuals. There really is no better way to part with summer. A little beach, a few oysters, a Goombay Smash and an afternoon band that makes you glad you to be alive. If you don't come to watch the band, come watch their following. You'll want to have what they're having.
Sunday night is Reggae Night with DJ Bud E. Green. There is never enough reggae, and this is the last call.
The Big News: This year we're staying open on Monday night and you should come. While we can't tell you exactly why, we can tell you you're going to want to be here. We have a special guest playing and according to a few hundred of our closest friends (you), it's a show worth seeing. Tickets on sale now
And then we're done.
But not really. Have you signed up to play golf with us yet? This year our tournament benefits the American Cancer Society. And it's fun. Last year we raised $17,453 - help us hit $20k this year! Click here for more information and ways to donate
Before you leave town, stop by the Beachcomber Store in South Wellfleet and stock up on gear. And then send us photos of where they end up. We love going on vacation and spotting a Comber bumpersticker on the car in front of us. It makes the world smaller and summer closer.
See you tonight.
Official business: Want to be able to tell everyone you worked at the Beachcomber? We're looking for some retail help at the front desk for the last few weeks of the summer. Come by the Beachcomber in person and apply!
And now, to the music....
This Thursday is Deer Tick. Deer Tick is one of those bands that people get in such a twist about, you have to go see them so you don't feel left out. And then you get in a twist about them. Don't like deer ticks? In an interview with himself, songwriter John McCauley explains, "some folks have taken offense to the name, but its not like we're advocates or parasitic arachnids, I just thought it sounded cool. I'd also like to note that I had never heard of Deerhoof or Deer Hunter until it was too late. Sorry guys." He also mentions that if you don't want to get covered in beer or confetti, stand in the back.
Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome Wellfleet's own PARKINGTON SISTERS! In June they played Bonaroo. In September they'll play at Fenway with Dropkick Murphys. We love it when we get to book a band of people we've known forever. We love that if we hadn't known them all their lives, they'd still be on our radar. They play some of our favorite places - including Boston's Museum of Fine Arts this Wednesday. The MFA is almost exactly identical to the Beachcomber. Go to both shows and see if you can tell them apart.
Advance tickets for the Parkington Sisters at the Beachcomber not the MFA
Speaking of almost completely identical, the night right after the Parkington Sisters (Saturday) we welcome Gene Ween and Dave Driewitz, of Ween - who are exactly nothing like the Parkington Sisters. Have you been here for a Ween show? This will sell out. If you miss the show, everyone will be talking about it the next day and you'll be on facebook asking when we're booking them again and we'll hit our heads on something hard. Can we try to avoid that this year? Thank you.
Advance tickets for Gene Ween and Dave Driewitz, while you can.
R.E.M.'s Scott McCaughey and Peter Buck, ex-Dream Syndicate member Steve Wynn and Miracle 3's Linda Pitmon like baseball - so they formed The Baseball Project. The Baseball Project is the peanut butter, honey and banana sandwich of rock-and-roll. Their latest album, High and Inside, is described as "another winning collection of songs about the game’s greats that will be pleasing to those who love America’s pastime — and fans of intelligent, melodic and fun rock." We can't wait, and neither should you.
Tickets for The Baseball Project
Barrington Levy comes on Monday! We don't want to scare you, but summer is winding down and there are only so many reggae shows left. This is one that should be on the summer bucket list, without question. You coming?
Here's the line-up, all tidy:
August 25, 10:00 pm, $18 Deer Tick
August 26, 10 pm, $12 Parkington Sisters
August 27, 10 pm, $25 Gene Ween and Dave Driewitz
August 28, 10 pm, $15 The Baseball Project
August 29,10 pm, $25 Barrington Levy
August 30, 10 pm, $5 DJ Bud E Green
All good? All good.
See you in the dunes!
Collie Buddz is sold out tonight! There are still some tickets left for SOJA tomorrow, though. Don't blow it. This week - the whole rest of the summer, in fact - is packed with shows you really shouldn't miss.
Fresh off Lollapalooza, Collie Buddz is playing one night a tthe Comber before heading off to Reggae on the Rocks (Red Rocks, CO) and points in between. We have to say, there are a few places where the venue really makes the show, and Red Rocks is one of them. In fact, if they were on Cape Cod and were a bar, they probably would have been named "Best Bar" (Cape Cod) in Boston Magazine's "Best of Boston 2011". Since they're not, though, the title is ours.
We don't mean to be gloaty, but dang this has been a summer of accolades.
We love the ones from magazines and newspapers because it helps us justify our summers to our moms, but the accolades we like best are from you. Thanks for sticking up for us when people complain that the parking lot is full on a Saturday afternoon in August. And thanks for recommending us to your friends. Thanks for riding on the Pan Mass Beachcomber team (yay!) and thanks for helping us raise money for the American Cancer Society by playing golf with us in the fall. All of this would be really boring without you.
We don't mean to scare you, but we're running out of summer. Here are your marching orders. Please plan your life around the following dates. Shows with an asterisk are selling fast. You've been warned.
August 9, 10 pm $20 SOJA*
August 11, 10 pm $25 Fountains of Wayne (opening act: Nicole Atkins)*
August 12, 10 pm, $12 Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers*
August 13, 10 pm, $15 ($10 w/ pass) Incredible Casuals (and there was much rejoicing...)
August 14, 10 pm, $18 King Yellowman
August 15, 10:30 pm, $18 J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.)
August 18 & 19, 10 pm, $20 John Brown’s Body*
August 20, 10:00 pm, $20 Easy Star All Stars*
August 21, 10:00 pm, $10 Bodega Girls, with FacesOnFilm
August 25, 10:00 pm, $18 Deer Tick
August 26, 10 pm, $12 Parkington Sisters
August 27, 10 pm, $25 Gene Ween and Dave Driewitz*
August 28, 10 pm, $15 The Baseball Project
August 29,10 pm, $25 Barrington Levy
September 4, 4pm, $10 Incredible Casuals
Pasting all those ticket links in took about seventy five hundred hours, so use them, okay?
About that parking lot situation. People don't seem to like going to the beach in the rain. Ergo, it's the perfect time to come for lunch or dinner. Don't forget, when you pay for parking in our lot (the one behind the club, not in front), you can redeem your parking voucher on food or merch inside. Easy peasy.
See you in the dunes!

Clams! Casuals! Adjectives!
Oh baby it is HOT!
You know what's good when it's hot? The condensation from a plastic cup held to your forehead, a little something from the raw bar, a whole heap of your closest friends and a view of the Atlantic. We have an entire Cape Cod vacation, right here waiting for you! We even have the t-shirt (buy at the club, at our store on Rte. 6, or online!) 'Comber Store
It's been so great seeing all your happy faces here in Cahoon Hollow. What a summer it's been so far! It seems a lot of people have taken the advice of one reviewer at Trip Advisor:
"...go to the Beachcomber, early and often. I insist. Just don't take my seat at the bar."
This post is courtesy of TwoBusy, whose music commentary we dig very much:
It’s a subtle thing. When you try to describe the music of Kathleen Edwards to someone who doesn’t know her – or who, God help them, is unaware of the sometimes raucous and sometimes sepia-tinged pleasures of alt-country – it can be difficult to find the words to define what
You wanted to hear from some of our musicians, so here you go! Will Dailey gets the ball rolling:
It is usually this time of year that my mind begins to yearn like a sad dog for the opposite end of the season cycle. A big snow fall and stopped everything, calming us all down for 6 hours. Then that same snow fall squeezes into tighter lanes. It ...
Greetings to all!

What a great response to our fundraiser! The Beachcomber sent a check to the Red Cross for $3,800. That's 100% of each pass sold on January 21. Thank you! The work was done by volunteers and the Beachcomber covered all the transaction fees, materials and shipping. Speaking of shipping....
Looking for your pass? It's on its way to you now. We hope...
On Thursday, January 21, the Beachcomber will be selling season passes to raise money for the Red Cross. 100% of this Thursday's pass sales will go to the Red Cross.
Why buy a 2010 season pass to the Comber? It gets you free beach parking (first come, first parked), discounted or free admission to selected shows and 10% off items at the Beachcomber...
Dear Beachcomber,
Me and my gals rented one of the two newest houses on the hill, across from you, last week. If it weren't for you, we would have gone hungry. If it weren't for you, we would have gone thirsty. If it weren't for you, we wouldn't have EVER met your steamy staff. If it weren't for you, we would have listened to a LOT less reggae. And most importantly, if it weren't for you, our summers would NOT be complete! Thank you, Beachcomber, for all that you are. Until next summer, with hopefully one less Tropical Storm Danny, keep us in the loop.
Warmest regards,
Jaime
PS: Todd, he kicks ass.
(thanks, Jaime! we will.)
Did you make it here for Tarrus Riley? Here's a little something to remember him by:
(thanks to Chris Blood)
